The city is primarily famous for its Grote Markt, which, with an area of 3.2 hectares, is the largest market square in all of Belgium and forms the historical, social, and commercial center of the town. Every Thursday morning, it hosts one of the liveliest and most traditional markets in the region. An annual highlight on this square is the "Vredefeesten," an international hot air balloon festival that attracts spectators from home and abroad.
