Castle of Boussu (Belgium)

Weather…

The Castle of Boussu, located in the Province of Hainaut, was once one of the most magnificent Renaissance castles in Northern Europe. Construction began in 1539 commissioned by Jean de Hennin-Liétard, the first Count of Boussu, based on plans by architect Jacques Du Brœucq. The complex was designed as an aristocratic residence, yet it retained defensive elements such as a moat. Over the centuries, the castle suffered greatly from warfare; it was attacked by French troops in 1555 and severely damaged again in the 17th century. Today, mainly the impressive châtelet (gatehouse) and archaeological remains of the once splendid building survive. The 12-hectare site includes a romantic-style park from the 19th century and houses a museum that presents the history of the complex and the results of archaeological excavations.
