The Belfry of Mons (Beffroi de Mons), standing proudly at the highest point of the city, is an outstanding architectural landmark and a national rarity. As the only belfry in all of Belgium constructed in a pure Baroque style, it stands in stark contrast to the predominantly Gothic or Romanesque bell towers typical of the region. Built between 1661 and 1672 according to the designs of architect Louis Ledoux, the imposing tower reaches a height of 87 meters. With its striking onion-shaped dome and elegant lines, it serves as a testament to the wealth and civic pride of the city during the 17th century. The tower functioned not only as a watchtower to spot fires or approaching enemies but also houses an impressive carillon of 49 bells, whose melodies regularly ring out over the city's rooftops. In recognition of its unique architecture and profound historical significance, the Belfry of Mons was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1999, as part of the Belfries of Belgium and France.
