Bernissart, located in the Walloon province of Hainaut near the French border, is world-famous for one of history's most significant paleontological discoveries. In 1878, 30 nearly complete Iguanodon skeletons dating back 125 million years were unearthed in a local coal mine, the Fosse Sainte-Barbe. This find revolutionized our understanding of dinosaurs. Today, visitors can learn about this fascinating history at the Iguanodon Museum, although the original skeletons are displayed in Brussels. The town itself has a rich industrial past, deeply rooted in coal mining. It gives a quiet, rural landscape with many hiking and cycling trails, especially around the Marshes of Harchies, an important bird sanctuary. Gastronomically, the region is known for its strong beers and hearty dishes like 'carbonnade flamande'. Bernissart is best reached by car, about 30 minutes from Mons.
