Belœil Castle, frequently referred to as the 'Versailles of Belgium,' has been the ancestral seat of the Princes de Ligne for more than 600 years. Originally established as a medieval fortress in the 14th century, the estate was transformed into a magnificent Baroque residence over the subsequent centuries. In 1900, the main castle was significantly damaged by fire but was expertly rebuilt by architect Ernest Sanson, who restored its 17th-century elegance and grandeur. The interiors are home to a remarkable art collection, period furniture, and an extensive library containing over 20,000 rare volumes. The castle is equally famous for its 25-hectare French formal gardens, designed by architects including Jean-Michel Chevotet. These gardens feature symmetrical canals, ornate sculptures, and long perspectives that epitomize the classical style. As a cultural hub in the province of Hainaut, the castle hosts prestigious annual floral exhibitions, maintaining its status as one of the most significant aristocratic heritage sites in Belgium.
