Hoëgne (Belgium)

Weather…

The Hoëgne is a rushing mountain stream in the Belgian Ardennes, originating deep in the heart of the High Fens Nature Park. The river's water features a distinct dark, almost tea-like hue, attributable to the extremely high peat and iron content of the soils in the raised bogs from which it feeds. On its journey down into the valley, the Hoëgne flows through dense, primeval-like deciduous and coniferous forests, overcoming numerous elevation drops through a series of easy on the eye small cascades and wild rapids. The Hoëgne Valley is primarily famous for its spectacular, approximately 10-kilometer-long hiking trail. Originally developed at the end of the 19th century, this path leads adventurers across countless rustic wooden bridges, narrow boardwalks, and staircase-like rocks directly alongside the roaring water. The almost mystical atmosphere of the valley makes it one of the most fascinating excursion destinations in Wallonia.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Usually reached via regional roads leading into the Ardennes valleys near the main trailheads. Local signs generally point visitors toward the established starting points for the various river walks.
📅
Best season
The optimal time for a visit is typically between late spring and early autumn when the weather is milder. However, after heavy rainfall, the waterfalls display their most impressive natural flow.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Expect to navigate uneven, rocky paths alongside the mountain stream, which can often be quite slippery. The deep valley landscape requires a reasonable level of basic fitness for most hiking trails.
🎒
What to bring
Sturdy, waterproof hiking boots are highly recommended due to the generally wet and rocky conditions. Bringing layered clothing and a reliable rain jacket is usually a smart choice for this environment.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors can typically find designated parking areas located near the main entrances to the river valley trails. Arriving early during peak weekend periods is often advisable to secure a good spot.
⚠️
Safety
Always exercise caution near the water's edge and on mossy rocks, as they tend to be extremely slippery. It is generally advised to stay on marked paths and avoid crossing the wild stream during high water.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical hiking visit along the main sections of the river usually takes around two to four hours. Those planning to walk longer valley loops should allocate a full half-day for a comfortable pace.
