Ath is a historic city in the province of Hainaut, Belgium, situated at the confluence of the two Dender rivers. The city was founded in the 12th century by Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut, who commissioned the construction of the Burbant Tower (Tour Burbant) as a defensive stronghold. This massive Anglo-Norman keep is the oldest monument in the city and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Ath is internationally famous for its 'Ducasse' festival, held every year on the fourth Sunday of August. The highlight of the event is the parade of giants, enormous figures that are carried through the streets, a tradition that has also been honored as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Beyond its folklore, the city features a well-preserved historic core with the Saint-Julien church and the neoclassical Town Hall. Economically, Ath has transitioned from an agricultural hub into a city with a diverse service sector, offering a high quality of life with its numerous parks and proximity to the Walloon countryside.
