The city was founded in the 12th century by Baldwin IV, Count of Hainaut, who commissioned the construction of the Burbant Tower (Tour Burbant) as a defensive stronghold. This massive Anglo-Norman keep is the oldest monument in the city and is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
