Yelnya Landscape Reserve

The Yelnya Landscape Reserve in the northern Vitebsk region encompasses one of the most massive contiguous raised bogs on the European continent. Over 9,000 years old, this peat complex forms a complicated hydrological system that harbors more than 110 small glacial lakes at its center. This inaccessible terrain, consisting of Sphagnum mosses, cottongrass, and deep bog pools, serves as a central stepping stone on the East Atlantic flyway. Every autumn, an estimated 4,000 cranes, along with thousands of wild geese, gather here before embarking on their journey to Southern Europe and Africa. In addition to its importance for birdlife, Yelnya is a valuable carbon sink and produces large quantities of economically utilized cranberries, the harvesting of which by local residents is strictly regulated.
