Petrykaw is a historic town located on the left bank of the Pripyat River in the Gomel Region of southern Belarus. Local lore suggests the town was founded in the 15th century by a prince named Peter, which gave the settlement its name. For centuries, Petrykaw served as a crucial trading hub along the strategic waterways of the Pripyat. In contemporary times, the town's character has been transformed by the discovery of vast potash salt deposits. Today, Petrykaw is home to one of Belaruskali's most advanced mining and processing complexes, driving significant economic growth in the region. Architecturally, the 19th-century Church of St. Nicholas remains its most prominent spiritual landmark. The natural surroundings are characterized by extensive floodplains and proximity to the Pripyatsky National Park, making it a favorite spot for fishing and nature enthusiasts. The town successfully integrates its long-standing heritage as a river port with its modern status as a center for the mineral fertilizer industry.
