Chashniki is a town in the Vitebsk Region of northern Belarus, situated along the banks of the Ulla River. The settlement was first mentioned in historical records in 1504, during its time as part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. It is historically significant for the Battle of Chashniki in 1564, a key engagement of the Livonian War in which Lithuanian forces secured a notable victory. During the 19th century, the town emerged as a major trading hub for grain and flax. Today, Chashniki's economy is heavily influenced by the nearby Lukoml power station, which is the largest thermal power plant in Belarus. The town's architecture features a blend of traditional Belarusian wooden houses and Soviet-era structures. Geographically, the area is influenced by the nearby Berezina Biosphere Reserve, offering a rich natural environment. As the administrative center of its district, Chashniki remains an important regional transport and industrial node.
