Lukoml Power Station (Belarus)

Weather…

The Lukoml thermal power station, officially known as Lukomlskaya GRES, serves as the absolute beating heart of the Belarusian electricity supply grid. Situated on the pretty shores of Lake Lukomlskoye, which acts as a gigantic natural cooling reservoir, the power plant was constructed in multiple phases between 1969 and 1974. Boasting an immense installed capacity exceeding 2,800 megawatts, it is by far the most powerful conventional power station in the republic, covering up to a third of the total national electricity demand during peak times. The massive turbines and generators are primarily fueled by natural gas imported from Russia, though they can be swiftly switched to heavy fuel oil in emergency scenarios. Through comprehensive modernization programs enacted over the past decade, the facility's overall efficiency has been substantially increased, further cementing its role as the ultimate guarantor of a stable national energy supply.
