Caconda is a historic town in the Huíla Province of southwestern Angola, located approximately 280 kilometers north of Lubango. It was established in the late 17th century by the Portuguese as a fortified outpost to secure trade routes with the interior. The region gained scientific fame in the 19th century through the work of Portuguese naturalist José Alberto de Oliveira Anchieta, who collected numerous botanical and zoological specimens in the area. Geographically, Caconda is situated on a high plateau at an elevation of about 1,600 meters, resulting in relatively cool temperatures and ample rainfall. The local economy is primarily driven by agriculture, with a focus on growing maize, beans, and tobacco. Following the damage sustained during the Angolan Civil War, much of the colonial-era architecture and infrastructure has been restored in recent years.
