Cassinga Battlefield (Angola)

Weather…

Cassinga is a historical site in Angola's Huila Province, internationally recognized for the tragic events of May 4, 1978. On this day, the South African Defence Force launched 'Operation Reindeer', a massive airborne assault on a camp inhabited by members of the Namibian liberation movement, SWAPO. While South African authorities claimed it was a strategic military base, international observers and survivors identified Cassinga as a refugee settlement. The attack resulted in hundreds of casualties, including many women, children, and the elderly, sparking global outrage and leading to stricter international sanctions against the apartheid regime. Today, the site serves as a somber memorial and a testament to the struggle for independence in Southern Africa. The mass graves and remnants of the assault are silent witnesses to one of the bloodiest chapters of the Cold War in Africa, which deeply influenced the shared history of Angola and Namibia.
