The Fort of Muxima, situated on the banks of the Kwanza River, was constructed by the Portuguese in 1599 to secure colonial expansion into the interior. It served as a strategic military outpost for protecting the slave trade and defending against local resistance movements. During the Dutch occupation of Luanda between 1641 and 1648, Muxima remained one of the few locations where the Portuguese maintained their presence. Beyond its military function, the site is closely linked to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Muxima, founded in 1594, which is Angola's most significant Christian pilgrimage center. The fort is built from local limestone and mortar, offering a wide view over the river valley, highlighting its historical importance for controlling inland navigation. Today, the complex is a national monument where history and religious tradition uniquely intertwine.
