Sanctuary of Muxima (Angola)

Weather…

The Sanctuary of Muxima, located in the Quiçama district about 130 kilometers from Luanda, is Angola's most important Catholic pilgrimage site. The sanctuary's origins date back to 1599, when the Portuguese built a chapel following the founding of the Muxima fortress. 'Muxima' means 'heart' in the local Kimbundu language, highlighting the site's deep spiritual significance as the heart of Angolan faith. The sanctuary houses the image of the Virgin Mary (Nossa Senhora da Muxima), to whom numerous miracles are attributed. Every September, tens of thousands of pilgrims from across the country and abroad travel to the sanctuary to participate in solemn processions on the banks of the Kwanza River. The church features simple colonial architecture harmoniously embedded in the surrounding nature. Muxima is not only a place of prayer but also a national symbol of peace and reconciliation after years of conflict. There are currently plans for a major expansion of the site to accommodate the steadily growing crowds of pilgrims.
