Quissama Nature Reserve (Angola)

Weather…

The Quissama Nature Reserve (Quiçama National Park) is Angola's most accessible national park, located approximately 75 kilometers south of the capital, Luanda. Established in 1938 as a game reserve and elevated to national park status in 1957, it covers an area of nearly 10,000 square kilometers. The park is bounded by the Cuanza River to the north and the Atlantic Ocean to the west, creating an extraordinary range of ecosystems from coastal strips to dry savannas. Following heavy poaching during the civil war, 'Operation Noah's Ark' was launched in 2001, where elephants and giraffes were flown in from South Africa and Botswana to repopulate the area. Today, the park is once again home to impressive wildlife, including antelopes, monkeys, and a rich variety of bird species in the Cuanza wetlands. Quissama is a pioneer of ecotourism in Angola, offering visitors the chance to experience safaris in a landscape famously dotted with majestic baobab trees.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The best time for wildlife viewing is the dry season from roughly May to October, when animals gather around remaining water sources. During these months, chances of spotting iconic Angolan wildlife such as antelopes and elephants are at their peak.
🌅
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are the most active times, as many animals prefer the cooler hours. Plan your visits between 6-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. for optimal observation conditions.
📜
Etiquette
Always stay in your vehicle or on marked trails to avoid disturbing the animals. Never feed or lure wildlife - this harms their health and natural behavior.
🎒
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens are essential for observing animals from a safe distance. Sturdy closed-toe shoes and light, breathable clothing are recommended due to the uneven terrain.
🧭
Getting there
The reserve is located about 70 kilometers south of Luanda and is reachable via the EN 100 national road. A high-clearance vehicle is recommended, especially outside the dry season due to road conditions.
🦌
What to expect
Wildlife viewing requires patience - even in the best season, animals can be shy or widely scattered. Plan at least two full days to calmly explore the diversity of fauna.
