Chlef, located in the heart of the valley that bears its name, is a city of resilience and agricultural abundance. Historically known as the Roman Castellum Tingitanum, it was refounded as Orleansville during the French colonial era and later renamed El Asnam. The city is tragically famous for its seismic history, particularly the devastating earthquakes of 1954 and 1980, which led to a near-total reconstruction using modern earthquake-resistant standards. Geographically, the region is dominated by the Chlef River, the longest in Algeria, which irrigates the vast plains for cereal and citrus production. Today, Chlef is a thriving commercial center and home to a significant university named after the freedom fighter Hassiba Benbouali. The city symbolizes the courage of its inhabitants, who have built a modern and dynamic urban environment despite natural disasters. With its central location between Algiers and Oran, Chlef remains an indispensable economic and logistical hub in northern Algeria.
