Lake Kamnarok (Kenya)

Weather…

Lake Kamnarok is a small but ecologically vital oxbow lake situated in the Kerio Valley of Kenya, at the base of the Elgeyo Escarpment. Its name is derived from the Kalenjin word for a species of wild watermelons found in the area. The lake gained fame for hosting one of the densest populations of Nile crocodiles in Africa, second only to Lake Chad at its peak. The surrounding Lake Kamnarok National Reserve, established in 1983, protects a semi-arid ecosystem inhabited by elephants, various antelopes, and over 500 bird species. However, in recent decades, the lake has faced severe existential threats due to massive siltation caused by soil erosion from the surrounding hillsides, exacerbated by deforestation and overgrazing. In 2021, the lake nearly dried up completely, threatening the survival of its crocodiles and the livelihoods of local communities. Current restoration efforts focus on building check dams and reforestation to stabilize the water levels and preserve this unique Rift Valley sanctuary.
