Zvërnec Monastery (Albania)

Weather…

The Zvërnec Monastery, also known as St. Mary's Monastery, is picturesquely located on the small island of Zvërnec within the Narta Lagoon near the city of Vlorë. This monastery is a prominent example of Byzantine architecture, believed to have been constructed during the 13th or 14th century. The main church features a cross-in-square design with a central dome and displays characteristic brickwork masonry typical of the medieval period in this region. The island is connected to the mainland by a long wooden pedestrian bridge, which enhances the site's sense of tranquility and seclusion. During the communist era, the monastery was repurposed as a storage facility and fell into disrepair until it was carefully restored after 1990 and reopened for religious services. Surrounded by dense pine forests, the complex has both historical insights and a unique natural setting. Every year on August 15th, the feast of St. Mary is celebrated with large processions and festivities, attracting pilgrims and visitors from all over Albania.
