Pishë Poro Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Pishë Poro Nature Reserve is located on the central Adriatic coast of Albania, situated between the mouths of the Vjosa and Seman rivers. Spanning approximately 1,500 hectares, it is renowned for its extensive coastal forests of Mediterranean pines (Pinus halepensis and Pinus pinea). The reserve was established in 1994 to protect one of the country's best-preserved dune ecosystems. The landscape features a dynamic mix of sandy beaches, shifting dunes, salt marshes, and canals. Geologically, it is an accumulation coast constantly reshaped by the sediment load of the Vjosa River. The flora includes the eponymous pines along with rare marram grass communities and salt-tolerant species. For avifauna, Pishë Poro holds international significance as a vital refuge for waterfowl during migration. The dense woodlands also provide a habitat for golden jackals and wildcats. In recent times, the ecosystems have faced threats from forest fires and coastal erosion, necessitating increased reforestation and coastal protection efforts.
