Narta Lagoon (Albania)

Weather…

Narta Lagoon is situated north of Vlorë along the Albanian Adriatic coast and ranks as the country's second-largest lagoon system. Covering an area of approximately 41.8 square kilometers, it is a central part of the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape. The lagoon is separated from the sea by a narrow sandy bar and is characterized by its shallow waters, with depths ranging from 0.7 to 1.5 meters. It is recognized internationally as a key bird area, hosting significant populations of greater flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans during migration seasons. Within the lagoon lies Zvërnec Island, reachable by a long wooden bridge, which features a well-preserved 13th-century Byzantine monastery dedicated to Saint Mary. Economically, the northern section of the lagoon is utilized for salt production at the Skrofotina salt pans, a practice dating back centuries. Currently, the lagoon's ecological integrity is a subject of conservation focus due to its role as a biodiversity hotspot in the Mediterranean region.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Narta Lagoon is a birder's paradise in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). Flamingos and pelicans are the main draws, and the lagoon hosts thousands of waterbirds.
🌅
Best time of day
Sunrise bathes the lagoon in orange light and birds begin feeding - an unforgettable sight. Late afternoon flocks fly to roosts, forming impressive clouds against the sky.
📜
Etiquette
Keep distance from flamingos and pelicans - at least 50m to avoid stressing them. Do not enter the salt pans as they are fragile habitats and birds breed there.
🎒
What to bring
A spotting scope with 20-60x zoom is good for watching flamingos and pelicans in the shallow lagoons. Don't forget sunscreen and a hat as there is little shade.
🧭
Getting there
The lagoon lies north of Vlora, accessible via the SH8 road then a small road towards the coast. A parking area is near the salt pans, from where you can reach the observation platforms.
🦌
What to expect
Flamingos may stand far out on the lagoon - wait for them to come closer or for high tide to push them nearer shore. A quiet afternoon with patience often yields the best photos.
