Sazan Island (Albania)

Weather…

Sazan is Albania's largest island, strategically positioned at the entrance to the Bay of Vlorë where the Adriatic and Ionian Seas meet. Covering an area of approximately 5.7 square kilometers, the island features a distinct Mediterranean climate and unique vegetation. For decades, Sazan was a highly militarized zone and served as a crucial outpost during the Cold War, equipped with thousands of bunkers and an extensive network of underground tunnels. It was only in 2015 that the island was officially opened to tourists, although portions of it remain under military jurisdiction. The coastline is defined by sharp cliffs and pristine coves that offer excellent opportunities for diving and snorkeling. Sazan is part of the Karaburun-Sazan Marine National Park, which protects rare species such as the Mediterranean monk seal. Despite its military history, the island has remained a vital sanctuary for migratory birds and various reptile species.
