Varosh Fortress (Albania)

Weather…

Varosh Fortress, historically known as the Castle of Stelush, is situated on a steep peak in the Mat region and was a vital stronghold for the Kastrioti family. During the 15th century, the castle served as a strategic residence and defensive outpost for Skanderbeg in his resistance against Ottoman forces. Positioned at an altitude of approximately 1,200 meters above sea level, the fortress provided an unparalleled vantage point over the Mat and Dibra valleys. The fortification consisted of an upper acropolis and a lower fortified ward, protected by formidable stone walls. Historical accounts highlight the castle's critical role during Ottoman sieges, until it was eventually taken by the forces of Sultan Mehmed II in 1467. Remains of medieval settlements and churches in the vicinity of the ruins indicate the site's importance as an administrative and religious center. Today, the fortress remains an important monument to Albanian heritage, attracting hikers and history enthusiasts who wish to experience the rugged beauty and heroic past of the Mat mountains.
