Strelca Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Strelca Nature Reserve is located in southeastern Albania within the Gramos mountain range, near the city of Korçë, covering an area of approximately 500 hectares. The region is part of an ecologically valuable high-mountain massif characterized by extreme topography, including rugged peaks and steep precipices. Strelca was established as a protected area in 1996 to preserve its original mountain forests, consisting primarily of beech and fir, as well as alpine meadows. The geological foundation is mainly composed of metamorphic rocks and limestone, supporting specialized flora such as rare orchid species and mountain flowers. Due to its elevation above 1,500 meters, the climate is harsh with long winters, shortening the growing season. The reserve is a significant habitat for large mammals like brown bears and chamois, as well as rare birds of prey such as the Egyptian vulture. The area's remoteness has helped keep the nature largely untouched, though it poses challenges for monitoring and protection against poaching.
