St. Stephen's Cathedral (Albania)

Weather…

St. Stephen's Cathedral, widely known as the 'Great Church,' is a major Roman Catholic landmark in the city of Shkodër, Northern Albania. Its construction began in 1858 following a decree from Sultan Abdülmecid and was completed in 1867, becoming one of the largest cathedrals in the Balkans at the time. The cathedral served as a symbol of the Catholic community's resilience during the final decades of Ottoman rule. In 1967, during Albania's state-sponsored atheist campaign under communist rule, the building was converted into a sports hall, stripped of its religious identity. It was returned to the Catholic Church in 1990, and the first public Mass was celebrated by Father Simon Jubani, marking a turning point in the country's religious freedom. The interior is notable for its impressive wooden ceiling and religious artworks that survived the 20th-century upheavals. Currently, it is the seat of the Archdiocese of Shkodër-Pult and continues to play a central role in the spiritual and social fabric of northern Albania.
