Marubi National Photography Museum (Albania)

Weather…

The Marubi National Museum of Photography in Shkodër is the only institution of its kind in Albania and houses one of the most significant photographic archives in the Balkans. The collection traces its roots back to Pietro Marubbi, an Italian immigrant who opened the first photography studio in Albania in 1858, laying the foundation for an extraordinary visual documentation of the country. Across three generations, members of the Marubi family and their students captured the social, political, and cultural life of Albania on more than 500,000 negatives. These images document everything from royal weddings and popular uprisings to the everyday lives of ordinary citizens and the traditional costumes of various regions. Following the nationalization of the collection during the communist era, it was opened to the public in 1970 as the Marubi Phototheque. Modernized in 2016, the museum now presents these treasures in a contemporary setting, utilizing innovative media technology to bring the history of Albanian photography to life. As the cultural memory of the nation, the museum is an essential destination for anyone interested in the visual history of Southeast Europe.
