The Vau i Dejës Hydroelectric Power Station is the first major installation of the Drin River cascade, located near the city of Shkodër in northern Albania. Constructed between 1967 and 1971, it marked the beginning of large-scale hydropower exploitation intended to electrify the nation. The facility possesses an installed capacity of 250 megawatts, generated by five turbines. The plant harnesses the Drin River's flow just before it reaches the Shkodër plain. Its construction involved the creation of three separate dams, forming the Vau i Dejës reservoir, which also serves irrigation purposes for local agriculture. Vau i Dejës plays a fundamental role in providing base-load power to the Albanian electrical grid. In recent years, extensive rehabilitation efforts have been undertaken to enhance the efficiency of the 50-year-old machinery and improve flood control measures. The station remains a testament to the enduring quality of 20th-century Albanian hydraulic engineering.

What is this place?
The Vau i Dejës hydroelectric power station is the third stage of the Drin River cascade and an important component of the Albanian energy grid. It supplies large parts of the country with electricity and plays a key role in base load supply. For the Shkodër region, it is a significant infrastructure structure.
Visiting
The power station is not publicly accessible but is clearly visible from the nearby road. Visitors can view the dam wall and turbine houses from the outside. There is a viewpoint on the access road that features a good view of the facility.
Where to view it
The best viewpoint is the bridge over the Drin downstream of the power station, from where the entire dam wall is visible. The hill on the opposite side of the valley also features a panoramic view of the power station and reservoir. From the reservoir shore, you get a close view.
Local products
Local agricultural products such as corn, grapes, and olives are grown in the Vau i Dejës region. Nearby villages produce honey, cheese, and homemade wine. Fish is occasionally caught in the reservoir and sold at local markets.

The power station runs continuously all year, but the Drin's flow is highest in spring and autumn. The best time to visit is spring, when the reservoir is well filled. In summer, water levels drop, and the facility operates at reduced output.
