Orikum Lagoon is situated at the southern end of the Bay of Vlorë and covers an area of approximately 130 hectares. This coastal wetland is connected to the sea by a single narrow channel and maintains an average depth of 1.5 meters. The lagoon is historically significant due to its proximity to the ruins of the ancient city of Oricum, founded in the 6th century BC, which played a pivotal role during Julius Caesar's campaigns. Much of the surrounding area is part of the Pasha Liman naval base, which restricted public access for decades but inadvertently helped preserve the lagoon's biodiversity from intensive development. The waters support a variety of fish species, such as mullet and eel, and serve as a seasonal home for numerous migratory waterfowl. Geographically, the lagoon is framed by the Ceraunian Mountains, creating a unique microclimate and scenic backdrop. Conservation efforts are focused on protecting the riparian vegetation and managing the intersection of archaeological heritage and ecological stability.

Binoculars with 8-10x magnification are sufficient to identify birds on the lagoon. Wellington boots are handy if you want to step closer to the waterline where the ground is soft.

The lagoon is south of Vlora, a few kilometres from Orikum. Follow the road to Orikum then an unpaved track to the shore, where you can park.
