Amantia
Amantia was an ancient Illyrian city founded in the 4th century BC by the Amantes tribe, located on a prominent mountain ridge in the hinterland of Vlora. Its strategic position allowed it to control the Shushica Valley, playing a key role in trade between the coast and the inland regions. The most remarkable structure is the well-preserved stadium from the 3rd century BC, measuring approximately 60 meters in length and accommodating about 4,000 spectators. In addition to the stadium, the archaeological site includes the ruins of a Temple of Aphrodite, a monumental acropolis, and remains of early Christian basilicas. Amantia was renowned for minting its own coins, which points to significant economic autonomy and wealth during the Hellenistic period. The blend of military architecture and religious sites makes Amantia one of the most fascinating testaments to Illyrian civilization and its later integration into the Roman world.
