💡 Tips
- Book the Koman ferry tickets well in advance, especially during the busy summer months.
- Arrive at least an hour early at the ferry terminal; the final road section is unpaved, narrow, and often congested.
- Bring warm layers for the ferry ride, as the wind in the gorge can get chilly even on sunny days.
- There are no ATMs near the ferry port, so bring enough cash from Shkodër or Tirana for tickets and snacks.
🍽 Food
Fresh lake fish. Best enjoyed at the simple restaurants right near the ferry terminal.
Layered baked dish. Often available if ordered in advance at local guesthouses nearby.
Morning start. Grab one at the small cafe at the port before boarding the ferry.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Stock up on water and biscuits here, as options on the ferry are very limited.
Small vendors sometimes sell local trinkets near the boarding area in summer.
Walk slightly back up the access road for an undisturbed view of the massive dam and lake.
Find a quiet spot along the river below the dam, away from the bustling ferry port.

Koman is a small but strategically and historically vital village in the Shkodër County of northern Albania, situated on the banks of the Drin River. The settlement is globally recognized for the Koman Hydroelectric Power Station, completed in the 1980s, which remains one of Albania's largest energy infrastructure projects. The construction of the dam formed Lake Koman, world-famous for its impressive fjord-like scenery and regarded as one of Europe's most beautiful ferry routes. Archaeologically, Koman is of immense importance as the namesake for the 'Koman Culture' (7th-8th centuries), with finds at the nearby Dalmaca Hill providing critical evidence of the link between ancient Illyrians and early medieval Albanians. Geographically, the village is enclosed by steep, forested limestone mountains, creating a secluded and dramatic landscape. Today, Koman serves as the primary gateway for the ferry service to Fierza, connecting travelers to the Valbona Valley and the northern highlands. It stands as a unique junction of monumental industrial engineering, significant national history, and dramatic alpine nature.
