Mali i Cukalit is a prominent mountain massif in northern Albania, located northeast of the city of Shkodër. Standing at an elevation of 1,722 meters, it serves as an important transition between the flat coastal plains and the high peaks of the Prokletije range. Geographically, the mountain is characterized by its highly rugged relief and deep valleys carved by the Kir River and its tributaries. The region is known for its rich biodiversity and is home to several endemic plant species that thrive only on this massif. Historically, Mount Cukal was a strategic defensive point and a sanctuary for the residents of the Shkodër region during various invasions. The landscape has spectacular views of Lake Shkodra and the Koman reservoir to the east. The vegetation varies greatly with altitude, ranging from oak forests to alpine meadows. Today, Mali i Cukalit is a popular destination for hikers and naturalists who appreciate the wild beauty and geological complexity of the range. Numerous small mountain villages continue to preserve their traditional way of life and hospitality.

Getting there

The mountain is easily accessed from the city of Shkodra to the west. Local roads lead across the coastal plains and into the foothills, where the actual hiking trails begin.

The best season to visit extends from May through October. Because the mountain borders the coastal plain, the lower sections are often extremely hot and humid during peak summer.

The route begins gently on the plains and becomes steadily rockier and steeper as elevation increases. The path gives diverse landscapes ranging from scrubland to rocky summit ridges.

What to bring

A light daypack, breathable clothing, and plenty of fluids are important. Despite the moderate altitude of 1722 meters, hiking boots with good grip are advisable for the final summit push.

Parking spots can easily be found on the outskirts of Shkodra or in the small suburban villages. From there, the tour can be started directly on foot or with a quick local taxi drop-off.

Safety

The greatest danger during summer comes from the intense heat radiating off the coastal plains. An early morning start is crucial to tackle the steepest part of the climb before the midday sun hits.

You should plan for a long half-day or a full day to ascend to 1722 meters and return safely. Those starting their walk directly from Shkodra center will naturally need extra time for the approach.
