Bredhi i Sotirës Nature Reserve (Albania)

Weather…

The Bredhi i Sotirës (Fir of Sotirë) Nature Reserve is located in southern Albania within the Dropull municipality, near the Greek border. Spanning approximately 1,700 hectares, it protects one of the most valuable stands of Greek fir (Abies borisii-regis) in the country. The reserve lies on the slopes of the Mourgana mountains and is defined by a combination of high-alpine landscapes and dense coniferous forests. In addition to the fir, the area hosts beech and maple trees, creating a complex and stable forest ecosystem. The region is famous for its abundance of water; numerous year-round springs feed the streams that flow into the Drino Valley. This pristine environment provides a habitat for large mammals like the brown bear and the wolf, as well as several rare orchid species. Due to its frontier location, the area remained largely isolated for decades, which helped preserve its primeval forest character. Today, Bredhi i Sotirës is an essential site for scientific conservation efforts and ecologically focused hiking.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Bredhi i Sotirës Nature Reserve is best visited in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). The Greek firs are in bloom and wildlife such as roe deer and wild boar are particularly active.
🌅
Best time of day
The best time for wildlife watching is early morning and late afternoon when animals are foraging. During the midday heat, most species retreat into the dense forest.
📜
Etiquette
Stay on marked hiking trails to protect the sensitive forest floor and plant life. Take your rubbish with you and avoid loud noises so as not to scare the animals.
🎒
What to bring
Good footwear (hiking boots) is recommended as the trails can be uneven and rocky. Binoculars help observe birds and mammals in the tall fir canopies.
