Vurgu Plain (Albania)

Weather…

The Vurgu Plain is a fertile coastal lowland in the far south of Albania, near the city of Sarandë and the ancient site of Butrint. It extends between the Ionian Sea and the foothills of the southern mountains. Originally, the plain was a marshy area that was transformed into productive farmland through extensive drainage projects in the mid-20th century. Today, Vurgu is one of the most important agricultural areas in the region, known for the cultivation of citrus fruits, olives, and grains. The plain is irrigated by the Bistrica River and the Vivari Channel, which play a crucial role in the local ecosystem. The region is also historically significant due to its proximity to Butrint, showing traces of human settlement since antiquity. Because of its flat topography and coastal location, the plain is a vital habitat for migratory birds. The surrounding hills host numerous villages where residents traditionally live off agriculture and livestock.
