Qala-i-Jangi, meaning 'fortress of war,' is a massive 19th-century fortress on the outskirts of Mazar-e Sharif in northern Afghanistan. It was built in 1889 and served for over a century as an important military base for various Afghan regimes. The fortress gained international notoriety in November 2001 as the site of a bloody prison uprising. After the US invasion of Afghanistan, hundreds of captured Taliban fighters were held in the fortress. An uprising by the prisoners led to a multi-day battle in which hundreds of people, including a CIA officer, were killed. The massive mud-brick walls and imposing size of the fortress testify to its original military importance, but today its name is inextricably linked to the tragic events of the war and the controversies surrounding the treatment of prisoners. It serves as a grim reminder of the brutal conflicts that have plagued the country.
