What is this place?
The melon fields of Balkh province are known for their vast variety of sweet and juicy fruits. During the hot summers, they supply not only the local population but also markets across the whole country.
Visiting
The fields lie in the fertile plain north of Mazar-i-Sharif and are easily visible from the main road. During ripening, colourful piles of melons stack up at roadside stalls, inviting tasting.
Where to view it
A drive on the road from Mazar-i-Sharif to Termez is recommended, going straight through the melon-growing area. From the old citadel of Balkh, there is an excellent view across the green fields to the Amu Darya River.
Local products
Dozens of melon varieties are offered on markets - from honey-sweet cantaloupe to crunchy watermelon. Seasonal treats include dried melon slices and melon seeds as a snack.
Active season
The hot summer season from June to September is the main time for melon harvest and sales. Irrigation canals are in full operation during this period to supply the thirsty plants.
