Shrine of Hazrat Ali (Afghanistan)

Weather…

The Shrine of Hazrat Ali, known as the Blue Mosque, is a magnificent shrine in the heart of Mazar-e Sharif. It is one of the most important pilgrimage centers in Afghanistan. According to tradition, the tomb of Ali ibn Abi Talib, the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, is located here. The original tomb was discovered in the 12th century and a shrine was built, which was later destroyed by Genghis Khan. The current impressive structure dates from the late 15th century and was erected by Sultan Husayn Bayqara. Its defining feature is the facade covered with thousands of intricately painted blue tiles that shine in the sun and give the mosque its name. The complex is constantly being expanded and restored. Every year, countless pilgrims flock here, especially for the Persian New Year (Nowruz), to pray and participate in religious ceremonies.
