Established in July 1890, it served as the first major fortified base for the Pioneer Column on their trek toward Mashonaland. At the time, the site acted as a gateway to the country and hosted the territory's first post office and hospital. Located within the Tuli Circle on the border with present-day Botswana, it was a vital hub for trade and military logistics. The fort was a scene of intense diplomatic and military activity, particularly during the Matabele War and the Boer War.
