Fort Rixon (Zimbabwe)

Weather…

Fort Rixon is a historically significant location in the Insiza District of Matabeleland South province, Zimbabwe. The settlement was established in 1896 during the Matabele Rebellion as a military base for colonial forces. It was named after Frank Rixon, a member of the Pioneer Column who was active in the region. The fort served as a sanctuary for settlers and an operational base for the British South Africa Company troops during the suppression of the local uprising. Its strategic position allowed for control over surrounding farms and mining areas that were vital to the colonial economy. Today, Fort Rixon is primarily known as a farming hub but preserves monuments and graves from the period of conflict in the late 19th century. Remains of the original fortifications are still partially visible, attracting visitors interested in historical research. The region is also noted for its livestock ranching and gold mines, which have been operated since the colonial era.
