Limpopo River Wildlife Corridor (Botswana)

Weather…

The Limpopo River Wildlife Corridor serves as a vital ecological link connecting Botswana, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. As one of Africa’s great rivers, the Limpopo functions not only as a political boundary but, more importantly, as a migratory path for numerous wildlife species, particularly large transboundary elephant populations. The riparian vegetation, dominated by massive fever trees and ana trees, provides essential nutrients and cover in an otherwise arid landscape. In recent decades, significant efforts have been made to protect this corridor through the establishment of the Greater Mapungubwe Transfrontier Conservation Area (TFCA), which aims to remove fences and national barriers for wildlife movement. The region is also of immense cultural significance, having hosted the historic Mapungubwe Kingdom, a major center of international trade during the 13th century. Maintaining this corridor is critical for genetic exchange between isolated wildlife populations and helps mitigate human-wildlife conflicts in the surrounding agricultural lands.
