The Vumba Mountains, also known as the Bvumba, rise above the city of Mutare on the border with Mozambique. The name means 'mist', an apt description for the clouds that frequently drape the emerald-green peaks. This region provides a refreshing escape from the African heat, featuring lush montane forests, ancient tree ferns, and a wealth of botanical wonders, most notably in the Bvumba Botanical Garden. Wildlife enthusiasts come here for rare bird species like the Swynnerton’s Robin and to spot Samango monkeys in the canopy. Hiking to Leopard Rock or the Leopard Rock Golf Course features some of the most scenic views in the country. The area is also famous for its high-quality coffee and artisanal foods, with local cheesemakers and bakeries adding to the mountain-village charm. Vumba is easily reached from Mutare within 20 minutes by road. The mountain passes are paved but steep and winding, rewarding drivers with incredible vistas at every turn. While local taxis operate, having a private car is the best way to explore the various viewpoints, gardens, and boutique hotels scattered across the hills. The best time to visit is during the spring months of September and October when the flora is in full bloom. The rainy summer season (November to March) makes the waterfalls spectacular and the forests incredibly lush. Winter (May to August) is drier and cooler, offering the clearest views across the plains into neighboring Mozambique.
