The Eastern Highlands, also known as the Manica Highlands, stretch for more than 300 kilometers along Zimbabwe's eastern border with Mozambique. This fascinating mountainous region gives remarkable scenic diversity, ranging from gentle grass-covered hills and deep river-cut valleys to steep, rocky peaks. The climate here is significantly cooler and wetter than in the rest of the country, favoring lush mist forests, evergreen vegetation, and extensive tea plantations, especially in the Honde Valley region. The region reaches its highest point at Mount Nyangani with 2592 meters. Of historical significance are the numerous ancient ruins and the diverse flora and fauna preserved in the protected areas of the Nyanga and Chimanimani National Parks. Visitors appreciate the area for excellent hiking conditions, trout fishing, and bird watching.

Getting there
Reaching the highlands typically involves driving eastward from the central regions along well-maintained but winding mountainous roads. Public transport is scarce, making a privately rented car or a sturdy vehicle the most practical choice.
Best season
The dry winter months are widely considered the best time for hiking, offering crisp, cool air and clear skies. The summer months bring heavy mists and substantial rainfall, which can obscure views and make trails incredibly slippery.
Terrain & paths
The landscape is defined by rolling green hills, steep forested escarpments, and numerous cascading waterfalls dropping into valleys. Hikers will navigate a mix of well-trodden grassy paths and steeper, rocky trails requiring reasonable fitness.
What to bring
Warm layers and a waterproof jacket are essential, as the high altitude creates a surprisingly cool and damp microclimate. Strong hiking boots with excellent grip are highly recommended for tackling the uneven and often muddy mountain pathways.
Parking
Most established lodges, national park entrances, and popular waterfall viewpoints provide safe, designated parking areas for visitors. When exploring more remote trailheads, cars are usually left on the grassy verges of quiet dirt roads.
Safety
The primary hazards are rapid changes in weather, with thick, disorienting fog known to roll in unexpectedly and obscure the trails. Hikers should stick to marked paths, carry a detailed map, and inform local lodges of their intended routes.
Time needed
A minimum of three days is generally recommended to explore the diverse scenic drives and complete a few of the iconic mountain hikes. Serious trekkers often spend over a week traversing the different distinct ranges within the highland corridor.
