Bir Ali, located in the Shabwah Governorate, is one of the most visually impressive coastal spots in southern Yemen. The area is dominated by a dramatic extinct volcano whose crater forms a deep, circular lake right on the shoreline. The stark black volcanic rock provides a magnificent contrast against the white sandy beaches and the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Aden. The town's historical significance is immense, as it was the site of the ancient port of Qana, the main exit point for the legendary frankincense trade of the Hadramaut Kingdom. Visitors can hike up Husn al-Ghurab, a massive rock formation overlooking the bay, to see ancient ruins and inscriptions. The summit provides a dramatic 360-degree view of the coastline and several offshore islands that are great for boat trips. Local life revolves around fishing, and the area is famous for its delicious, freshly caught seafood. The well-suited time to visit is between October and April to avoid the extreme summer heat. Bir Ali is a lesser-known spot on the coastal road between Aden and Mukalla, offering a unique mix of ancient history, volcanic geology, and pristine maritime beauty.
