Ash Shihr is one of the oldest port cities on the Arabian Sea, lying about 50 kilometres east of Mukalla. As early as the 10th century, Arab geographers such as al-Hamdani and al-Idrisi described it as a major centre of Indian Ocean trade. Through Ash Shihr passed frankincense, dragon's blood from Socotra, dried fish, Hadhrami horses, Indian spices and Chinese porcelain. During the Mamluk period the city grew into a busy port with close ties to Aden, Hormuz and Calicut. Surviving from this golden age are sections of the old city wall, several mosques dating from the 14th to 16th centuries and traditional stone houses by the harbour. Ash Shihr was later overshadowed by Aden and Mukalla in world trade but kept its importance as a fishing port. Today its inhabitants live mainly from deep-sea fishing with traditional sambuks and small-scale boat repair, complemented by local industry and regional trade.
