Hamburger Hill (Vietnam)

Weather…

Hamburger Hill, known locally as Dong Ap Bia, is a prominent mountain in the A Shau Valley near the border with Laos. It became the scene of one of the bloodiest and most controversial battles of the Vietnam War in May 1969. US troops from the 101st Airborne Division spent ten days attempting to capture the heavily fortified mountain from North Vietnamese units. The name 'Hamburger Hill' was coined by soldiers to describe the horrific casualties that resembled a meat grinder. Although US forces eventually secured the summit, they abandoned the position just days later, sparking intense public criticism in the United States regarding military strategy. Today, the mountain is reforested and serves as a reminder of the horrors of war. A small memorial stone at the summit commemorates the fallen soldiers from both sides. The battle is regarded as a turning point after which the US began to gradually scale back its ground offensive in Vietnam.
