Vịnh Mốc Tunnels (Vietnam)

Weather…

The Vịnh Mốc Tunnels are a remarkable testament to the resilience and survival instinct of the Vietnamese civilian population during the Vietnam War. Located near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), the villagers of Vịnh Mốc constructed this complex underground system between 1966 and 1972 to escape massive American aerial bombardments. The tunnel network spans three levels at depths of up to 30 meters and includes living quarters, kitchens, wells, storage rooms, and even a maternity ward. Unlike the Cu Chi Tunnels, which were primarily used for military purposes, Vịnh Mốc served as a permanent refuge for about 300 people throughout the war. The geological composition of the soil allowed for construction without artificial supports, showcasing the engineering ingenuity of the locals. Today, the site is open to visitors, providing a poignant and fascinating glimpse into daily life underground, where 17 children were born during the conflict.
