Gallery of the Candelabra (Vatican)

Weather…

The Gallery of the Candelabra is a magnificent exhibition hall within the Vatican Museums, established in 1781 under the direction of Pope Pius VI. Originally an open-air loggia, the space was enclosed to accommodate the growing papal collection of classical antiquities. The gallery takes its name from the massive ancient marble candelabra placed in pairs throughout the hall, which effectively divide the space into six distinct sections. During the reign of Pope Leo XIII in the late 19th century, the gallery underwent a significant artistic update, including the addition of vivid ceiling frescoes by Ludovico Seitz that contrast Christian philosophy with ancient pagan themes. In addition to its namesake candelabra, the hall houses a rich variety of Roman sculptures, busts, and sarcophagi from the imperial era. The floor is meticulously decorated with precious marble inlays and fragments of ancient mosaics, underscoring the high aesthetic standards of the Vatican's curators. It remains one of the most elegant passageways leading toward the Sistine Chapel.
