St. Peter's Dome
The dome of St. Peter's Basilica, frequently called the 'Cupolone,' is a triumph of engineering and a defining landmark of the Roman skyline. Michelangelo Buonarroti began designing it in 1547, drawing inspiration from the Pantheon and the Florence Cathedral's dome. Following Michelangelo's death, Giacomo della Porta and Domenico Fontana brought the project to completion in 1590. The double-shell construction provides structural integrity and allows visitors to climb between the shells to reach the lantern at the top. Standing approximately 136 meters tall, it remains the world's tallest dome. The interior is lavishly adorned with mosaics depicting the hierarchy of angels, Christ, and the Virgin Mary. An inscription at the base of the dome features the biblical verse in which Jesus designates Peter as the rock of the Church. From the exterior gallery, visitors are afforded an unparalleled panoramic view of the Vatican Gardens and the city of Rome.
