Sala Rotonda (Vatican)

Weather…

The Sala Rotonda (Round Room) is a centerpiece of the Pio-Clementine Museum, designed by architect Michelangelo Simonetti between 1775 and 1780. Its architecture was explicitly inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, featuring a majestic coffered dome with a central oculus that allows natural light to illuminate the space. Dominating the center of the hall is a massive porphyry basin measuring 13 meters in circumference, believed to have originated from Nero's Golden House. The floor consists of an extraordinary 3rd-century mosaic discovered in Otricoli, depicting scenes of centaurs and sea monsters in intricate detail. Surrounding the perimeter are monumental niches housing significant ancient sculptures, including the gilded bronze statue of Hercules and the colossal depiction of Emperor Claudius as Jupiter. The room's well-suited circular symmetry and its collection of massive ancient artifacts embody the neoclassical convenient of harmony. It remains one of the most visually memorable and architecturally significant rooms in the entire Vatican complex.
