The Colosseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is a monumental oval amphitheatre in the centre of Rome, Italy. Its construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor Titus, with further modifications made during the reign of Domitian. Built from travertine limestone, tuff, and brick-faced concrete, it was the largest amphitheatre ever built, capable of seating an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. It was used for gladiatorial contests, public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. Over the centuries, the Colosseum has suffered significant damage from earthquakes and stone-robbers, but it remains an iconic symbol of Imperial Rome. Today, it is one of Rome's most popular tourist attractions and has close connections with the Roman Catholic Church, with the Pope leading a torchlit procession on Good Friday. Its architecture, particularly the system of arches and vaults, was revolutionary for its time and influenced countless modern structures.
