Nguna-Pele Marine Protected Area (Vanuatu)

Weather…

The Nguna-Pele Marine Protected Area (MPA) is an award-winning community-based initiative protecting the waters surrounding the islands of Nguna and Pele in northern Efate. Established in 2003 by 16 local villages, the MPA was formed to combat the decline of marine resources and build resilience against climate change. Geographically, the protected area covers over 3,000 hectares and encompasses coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests. A specific focus is placed on protecting spawning grounds for commercially important fish species and preserving endangered sea turtles. Management is carried out by a committee of local tribal chiefs and women's organizations, ensuring high levels of community compliance and support. Through the implementation of 'Tabu' zones where all harvesting is prohibited, fish stocks have seen significant recovery within just a few years. The MPA also serves as a critical educational hub for neighbouring islands and international students. it vividly demonstrates how traditional resource management can be successfully integrated into modern conservation strategies.
